Career-oriented women prefer to get pregnant in their 30’s.  After finishing school, they allot their time and energy in fulfilling their dreams. When they finally reach their goals or have at least acquired a stable career, they shift gears and concentrate on building a family.  But what if you can’t conceive immediately?  How do women who chose to delay their pregnancy and focus on their career cope with problems on conceiving?  What are the chances of women getting pregnant in their 30’s? When is the ideal age to conceive?
According to doctors, fertility generally declines after 30.  Women experience their biological fertility peak in their early 20’s.  So, as women grow older, the ticking sound of the fertility clock gets louder.  Thus, the pressure to conceive becomes greater to a woman as she gets older.  Pregnancy-related risks also increases as women enter their 30’s.
Laura and her husband have been trying to conceive a baby for two years now.  They have finally decided to build a family after concentrating on their respective careers since they got married five years ago.  For the couple, being both financially and emotionally mature is important in starting a family.  Now, after years of earning success in their careers, they are ready to face a new stage in their lives.
But after two years of trying to conceive, Laura has not gotten pregnant.  She decided to consult her OB-GYNE after a year of trying to conceive and since then has gone through series of work-up programs to become pregnant.  Timed intercourse, taking medicines to aid her in ovulation and different types of tests are some of the things she has undergone but still to no avail.
There are times when Laura regrets her decision of putting motherhood aside.  She feels that her early years should have been spent in building a family instead of building a career.   What must Laura and other women facing the same problem do?
It is true that age is an important factor to be considered in conceiving a child.  But there are also other factors that could lead to getting pregnant or having fertility problems besides age.  An active and healthy lifestyle which includes not smoking, regular exercise and healthy diet is vital to a healthy pregnancy whether a woman is in her 20’s or 30’s.
In the end, women are free to make their choices in life and motherhood is one great decision that needs enough preparation.  They can choose to have a child in their 20’s and  focus on themselves when they reach their 30’s or the other way around just like what Laura did.
Laura and for the other women who chose to fulfill their careers first before getting pregnant should focus on how to increase their chances of conceiving and lessen the risks they may face along the way.   Since, women in this age are pass the optimal period for getting pregnant, it is important that they give more than 100% of their effort in ensuring a healthy pregnancy.  Regular check-ups and an open relationship with your OB-GYNE are very important.  Just like any career, motherhood needs proper preparation, motivation and determination for you to achieve and reap its rewards.
